<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">Happy New Year bloggy friends! I have had the best (laziest) winter break in a long time. I got to spend time with family and friends, sleep in, bake cookies (or watch B bake…), exercise, read, and even clean! I loved every single second of it. But all good things must comes to an end, right?! So back to school I go (tomorrow)…</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">I always get a little anxious about going back to school after long breaks. As if I’ll forget what to do or something. I just keep reminding myself “Erin you can do this, you know how to do this, you are good at this.” I know…I’m nuts…oh well haha!</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;"> I find it is much easier to transition back to school if I <i>over</i> plan. That way I always have an extra trick up my sleeve just in case something gets <b>thrown</b> at me. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.sanjuan.edu/webpages/gguthrie/resources.cfm?subpage=108509"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eDgJLgTAzIA/TwM_Pv2fGfI/AAAAAAAAAHY/UAPP7awgtpc/s320/mittens_wl.jpg" width="247" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">I’ll start by having the kids write a recount of what they did over winter break on mitten shaped paper. I plan on using this as a template to cut notebook paper into because these lines are little too big for my students. Next I’ll have them illustrate their winter breaks on the blank mitten template and staple them into little booklets. oh.my.word. There are so many fun shapes for writing on <a href="http://www.sanjuan.edu/webpages/gguthrie/resources.cfm?subpage=108509">this site.</a> Why am I just finding this now?! </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">For Reader’s Workshop we will be starting our Jan Brett Author study. How stinkin' creative is Cara from The First Grade Parade? I’m really excited for this one. We will also be using the many resources from <a href="http://www.janbrett.com/index.html">Jan Brett's website.</a> The plan is to discuss text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections. It is always easier for my little ones to understand connections when related to an Author Study. They are able to see that most authors have a “style” and then are able to make really great connections to them. Do you do Author Studies in your room? I’d love to hear how you set them up? I know…dork alert. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">As for math…we are moving into a new unit…Solving Story Problems. Oh boy! This is our first year using TERC Investigations and I have to say it is much better than what we used to use. The only thing about it (and it’s like this with anything new) is it takes serious time reading through all of the teacher books, implementation books, and student activities. So I really can’t blame the program for making me read…that’s my job, right? I guess you know what I’ll be doing tonight… </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">What math programs do you guys use? Do you like them?</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Futura;">Well folks that's about all I have time for right now...be sure to check back to see what craziness is going on in J1W this week. Ohhh and check out my fun new little Pinterest button over there on the right hand side. Fun, right?! </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</style> <span style="font-family: "Apple Casual"; font-size: 12pt;">Every morning my principal sends out daily agendas. It keeps us all in the loop of what to expect that day with things like "oh heyyy watch out for a fire drill in the next few days" and "don't forget today is picture day." Every once in a while she will send out links or videos and a few days ago this was the video she sent. OMG. It has now become my class' theme song. My little people are OBSESSED with it. They danced around to it all afternoon yesterday. I should have videoed it because it was way too cute. Not to mention it has a super message. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Apple Casual"; font-size: 12pt;">Have a listen and I bet you will be dancing around in no time! Have a wonderful weekend. :) </span><br />

She was able to get us about 40 ipads and a technology integration specialist! We now have meetings every few weeks called Tech Café after school where our specialist, Francesca either shows us cool stuff to do with our kids or we share what is really working in our rooms (or NOT working at all)! Haha. It has been so awesome! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBLNqyblHzviphzmJ-bItkEGJviOhGJW17SiOHrT0u55oVqHb3KUnAN49df_af5WUUD3v7x1YkAit813rN4GGrCSPNBqu7vrKek_gXkt-dw1krXvxydsBuDS8rTR8LZXaYkGeX-zf5An8/s1600/show+me.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBLNqyblHzviphzmJ-bItkEGJviOhGJW17SiOHrT0u55oVqHb3KUnAN49df_af5WUUD3v7x1YkAit813rN4GGrCSPNBqu7vrKek_gXkt-dw1krXvxydsBuDS8rTR8LZXaYkGeX-zf5An8/s1600/show+me.jpg" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">A few weeks ago Francesca shared an ipad app called <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/showme-interactive-whiteboard/id445066279?mt=8">ShowMe</a>. OH MY WORD!! This little app has changed my teaching in such a fabulous way! You can take a photo (if you have the newer ipads) and record the kids’ voices sharing about their work. The kids can also “write” on their work by using their fingers. HOW FREAKIN’ COOL?! It is easier to explain if you just watch <a href="http://shme.co/vcJ06e">this little ShowMe presentation</a> I had 2 of my kids make. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I’ll wait until you are finished watching…. ;)</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Awesome- right?! </span><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I love ShowMe SO much that I wanted to share the kids’ learning process at Parent/Teacher conferences. I was able to use this as an assessment AND I could show parents during conferences exactly where their children are. It was fantastic! It helped me to see where I had lost the students who were struggling. It also showed me how their little minds were working. The best part about ShowMe is that you can play it back again and again to improve your teaching and lessons. Parents LOVED that they could hear their kids explaining their work. I would definitely recommend this app and plan on using it again! Oh I almost forgot to mention something super important!! <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/showme-interactive-whiteboard/id445066279?mt=8">ShowMe</a> is FREE!! That's right my friends...one of my favorite words- FREE! </span><br />

I thought this would be more challenging for my students, and I was curious to see how they would do with it. I color coded the words according to the pattern blocks -- except <b>silly</b> me mixed up the triangles and squares! Don't worry a little boy corrected me in about 30 seconds. ( I fixed it before uploading it on here) This little assessment told me SO much about each child's thinking! I could see who was using the strategies we have been working on in class like making 10. I could see who organized their thinking and how their minds were working. I was <b>AMAZED</b> at my little people!! Of course there are some who are still counting one by one on and on...and that was apparent, but now I know who and what I need to zone in on...tomorrow is another day, right?! </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

I didn’t have a clue how I was going to introduce this to 6 year olds without it going over their head. THEN I remembered a book I had read to my class last year – <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Kathryn-Otoshi/dp/0972394648">One</a> by Kathryn Otoshi. It was the PERFECT story to open the discussion about bullying and what bystanders should do. My kids LOVED the book so much they asked me to read it over and over again. I found a <a href="http://youtu.be/1TGaDSMAS1E">youtube clip</a> of Kathryn Otoshi reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Kathryn-Otoshi/dp/0972394648">One</a> while a group of elementary students acted it out. My kids thought this was the greatest thing ever and are now begging me to let them act it out…of course my answer was YES! Hopefully tomorrow we will have time to do this. I wanted to share this great read and clip. How do you deal with bullying in your class/school? </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">P.S Otoshi also wrote the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Zero-Kathryn-Otoshi/dp/097239463X/ref=pd_sim_b1">Zero</a> which is all about self-worth and liking yourself. This is also an excellent book that I highly recommend! I love her and want her to write another book NOW NOW NOW!! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">So as you all can see....I have my work cut out for me!!! The very nice men working on the rooms said they should be finishing up this week so I've decided to not go back in for a while. No point in re-arranging, cleaning, organizing, and decorating while construction is still taking place. I must say I am loving the brand new white walls I'll have this year. The good side of having to re-do the whole room is starting off fresh...like a blank slate. I hate getting stuck in my old ways of thinking especially when it comes to the layout of my classroom. Wish me luck and I'll be sure to post pictures of the finished room!! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><br />

I am having SUCH a fabulous time, but since there isn’t any internet access (ahhh can you imagine?!- haha- it is actually REALLY nice to be cut off from the world) I won’t be updating this little blog until August when I am back on mainland for good. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I have been attending a math conference this week and man oh man…I never thought I could spend 8 hours a day learning about math AND then coming home to want to work on how this is really going to look in my classroom, but here I am!! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Again, my school is going to start <a href="http://investigations.terc.edu/">Investigations</a> in the fall. So far I have noticed that there are 2 major points that are different in Investigations than what we are used to and currently doing.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">1 </span><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">WHAT concepts are taught (quality vs. quantity) Number sense is done over and over and over again because research shows this is where kids get completely lost in the older grades if not mastered in the beginning. No more fact memorizing…this does not transfer when kids are asked to do higher level thinking. I honestly wish I was taught with a bigger idea concept in mind way back when I was a little one. I feel as if I have to un-learn most of what I know about numbers and their relationships with each other. </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">2.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> </span></span><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">HOW the concepts are taught. <a href="http://investigations.terc.edu/">Investigations</a> is taught through the Math Workshop format as opposed to whole group instruction. </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">What does this mean for the teachers at our school?! I think it means we really need to re-learn mathematical concepts to make sure we are confident in the content we will be teaching. The leaders from the<a href="http://www.itm-nyc.org/"> Institute of Math Teachers </a>have really emphasized that perseverance is a giant component of math. They keep telling us to not be so quick to “help” the child that is struggling because students need to understand that working towards the answer is a KEY part of the process. If they don’t get the answer the first, second or maybe even third time they need to have the resilience to continue trying. Patience will need to be a priority for sure! </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> I also think it means we need to be ready to experiment, practice and MAKE MISTAKES! For many of the teachers at my school (myself included) this will be the first time doing a true Math Workshop format. It is much less teacher based and MUCH more student centered. I know I’m behind on the times, but hey it’s never too late…right? :/ </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">That sounds all great, but WHERE DO WE START?! </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I think the first place I need to start is setting up the classroom to fit a Math Workshop learning environment. This is where I come to you my bloggy friends…How do you organize your math manipulatives? Does each table/group of students have their own container with each different set of manipulatives or do you have math tubs with baggies of the manipulatives separated for each group? </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Investigations is big on student choice stations. Again, that sounds wonderful, but how do you manage and track which station each child has visited? A work board or individual tracking sheets?! I’m sorry if I sound like I am over thinking this…I just know come September I am going to be so overwhelmed with setting up my classroom, back to school routines, meeting my new little babies etc. I want to try and map this out now and not wait until then. </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">In preparation for the first unit: How Many of Each? I have taken the game Collect 20 Together and tweaked it a bit. I hope you can use <a href="https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B-1HE5I9yR7ENWUzM2QyMzgtOGI5ZS00ZjU1LWFiODYtN2E5OGNiZjQzOWMz&hl=en_US">this </a>with your kids!</span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Thank you for listening to my rant-haha! Sometimes I just need to get it out and then I am ready to plan my next move! </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><br />
</div><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I am looking forward to this new adventure, but definitely have my work cut out for myself!! DEEP breaths Erin- I can do this!! ;) </span></div><br />

I did it though and made them all promise to come and visit me when they are big bad second graders. I don’t know what the heck I was thinking, but I had signed up for a math conference starting today and going all the way until Thursday. AHHH!!! I spent the entire day with Mathematicians and math teachers from the Institute For Teaching Mathematics. Who ever knew math could be described as beautiful?! Man they are a different breed!!- haha!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">My school will be switching to Investigations in the fall and it seems to be very different than what we have now. I am eager to see how it will go. What program do you guys have at your schools? </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Anyway, I have A LOT of new ideas and projects I am working on, but I wanted to post a GREAT video I just found on Teachertipster.com. If you haven’t been over to that site yet….GO NOW!!!</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I hope to share with you some of my creations this week. I hope everyone is resting, relaxing and enjoying their summer break!!</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

This is my last week in school and man do I have A LOT to do!! My entire first grade team and I need to pack up our classrooms because they are re-doing our ceilings. UGGGH!!! This is SO not going to be fun! :(</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Over the course of the year I have sent home <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B-1HE5I9yR7EYzIwY2VjNzktNWZjNC00MWE1LWExOTQtMjc4MDNjNWE2OWVl&hl=en_US">math websites</a> on my weekly homework letters. They are typically games for the kids to play to review the topic we are covering that week. I had a few parents request all of the sites on one piece of paper. They said they really liked them and wanted their kids to use them over the summer. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I also plan on putting together a list of suggested ipad apps for those parents who have them. Hopefully I will post that list this week also. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />

My friend Nancy (Hi darling!) and I went to an <a href="http://www.prometheanworld.com/server.php?show=nav.22005&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=Activboard&utm_campaign=brand">ActivBoard</a> conference today. We had to go all the way uptown to Harlem and just in case you were wondering...there was NO AC!!! EHHH-YIKES! However, we did manage to learn a few tips and tricks. Plus we had <i>amazing</i> soul food at <a href="http://www.harlembarbqnyc.com/p/press.html">Harlem’s BBQ</a> and highly recommend it if you’re in the area! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">One of the ActivEducators told us about an author on <a href="http://www.prometheanplanet.com/en-us/">Promethean Planet</a> who makes <b>awesome</b> resources for flipcharts at NO COST!!! Those of you that have ActivBoards <span style="font-size: large;"><b>need</b></span> to become familiar with Promethean Planet because it is a wonderful resource for already made flipcharts and accessories if you want to create your own. The best part is most of them are FREE!!! Anyway, I am constantly on there searching for flipcharts I can tweak to fit my students’ needs (why re-invent the wheel…right?!) The author’s name is Kelly Gilchrist and you can search for her resources right where it says Search Resources (I promise it’s that easy!) I don’t know who this Ms. Gilchrist is, but I am glad I found out about her. I cannot wait to use her ready-made stuff next year!!! Thank you Kelly!!</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Do any of you have ActivBoards in your classrooms? What are some of your favorite things to do with them? </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I cannot wait until summer break so I can finally have some time to blog, and create new learning materials for my new group of little people! Oh and let's not forget some time to relax and recharge...ahhh <i>sooooo</i> excited! :)</span></div><br />

During our Family Unit the students will write family stories, poetry and share special family moments with our class. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">I cannot attached photos right now- Jeez Blogger you're killing me over here! I have my students Authors’ Reading this morning where they will be sharing their AMAZING poetry with their families. It is also the book fair and international food festival. It is always such a fun day. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Yesterday my kids made the sweetest Mother’s Day portraits of their moms. I also had the kids make the top ten reasons why their mom was the best (from <a href="http://whattheteacherwants.blogspot.com/2011/04/mothers-day.html">What the Teacher Wants</a>). </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">Hi blog friends!!! I just got back from a fabulous, but EXHAUSTING trip to Disney with my whole entire family!! My nieces and nephews had the best time and I’m so glad I went just to see their smiling faces at each new attraction. Now it is back to work!! The end of the year is coming and I have SO much to do, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">This week we are beginning double digit addition. My babies aren’t babies anymore and are getting SO darn smart!! Every year I forget how much they learn from September to June…it’s crazy! Anyway, I always begin this unit by reviewing place value. I made up a little game which we called Tens in a Row—BINGO! It was inspired by the math program my school uses (Houghton Mifflin- do any of you use it?!) It reviews mental math: adding tens. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">We started by reviewing with base ten blocks on the activboard. We played <a href="http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/numbers_to_100_b/">this game</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">Then I wrote the #s 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80,90 and 100 on the board. I told the children to choose 9 of the #s and fill them in on their grid. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">Next I described numbers like this- the number I am thinking of has 2 tens plus 3 tens and the kids had to find that number (50) on their grid and put a marker on it. I did this until someone called out TENS IN A ROW--BINGO!! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">Examples- 1 ten plus 3 tens (40), 7 tens plus 2 tens (90), 4 tens plus 3 tens (70) </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">My computer is being a real pain and will not allow me to post pictures right now?!?! but...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">You can download the grid paper <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B-1HE5I9yR7ENTI2YmRmYzktNjRjOC00ZWJiLTkwNTgtYzdiODg0NDYyYjcy&hl=en">here</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: small;">Enjoy!! </span></div></div><span style="font-size: small;"><br />

Silhouette?!<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">It is that time of year again…ordering! This used to be something that I absolutely LOVED to do. I would sit for hours and look up items I’d been eying or research the best of the best materials for my little ones out there. However, this year I just seem so busy it has almost become another “thing” on my list to do. Ahhh…I know I need to snap out of it and be thankful that I actually have a budget to order supplies with!! Ok that little vent session helped…haha. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">There is one thing I have wanted forever now. <a href="http://www.cricut.com/">A Cricut expressions</a>. I’ve seen such amazing things created for the classroom. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

My question is, which is better?! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Do they both cut graphics and letters large enough to be used on bulletin boards? Do you have to purchase the cartridges in order for the Cricut to work (some people are saying they can get things online?) </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Do any of you out there have either machine? Or do you have an opinion on which one works better for all things “teachery”? I’d love any advice I can get! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

It’s been a while!! Spring break was absolutely AMAZING, but now it is back to work for the little bit of the school year left! In continuing to prepare for our upcoming Story Unit I am sharing a visual I like to have the kids use when re-telling stories they have read. It is really funny how hard it is for kids and adults alike to re-tell a story they are familiar with. I always like to have the kids start this concept by talking about the books they are reading. Even though we have been doing this all year it is something they still need continual practice with. This sheet (which I print and then laminate for durability) really seems to help my little ones remember to include the story elements when verbally re-telling a story and then when it comes to written activities. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />

I leave for Jamaica in a few short hours and I’m pacing around the apt not knowing what to do with myself! Haha so obviously I decided to blog about an upcoming event at school. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Every year my school has an international book fair and food festival. On the same day each class has an author’s reading where the kids each read a story or poem aloud to their families. It is so much fun!! A lot of work, but way worth it in the end. I always have my little ones read poetry because it keeps it short, sweet AND still fun! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">One poem that I use for a prompt is Choose a Color by Jacqueline Sweeney. These turn out SO cute!! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Let me just tell you I am the happiest girl in the world right now! I am going to Jamaica with some very fun friends on Wednesday (poor B has to stay home because his graduate program has a different schedule…booooo!) My body, mind and soul all need some R&R like none other. Before I completely drift off into laa-laa land I wanted to share what I’ve been working on…</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print";">Our school has been working very hard this past year to re-vamp our current curriculum. Our Principal has worked with us to create interdisciplinary units using a curriculum program called Atlas Rubicon. At first most teachers would roll their eyes or mumble under their breath when Atlas was talked about. However, now I’m finally seeing what the purpose of it is. It will be great when all of our units are uploaded onto it and we can have a clear look at our year in one place. The art, music, foreign language teachers etc. will be able to see when we teach certain units and we will be able to collaborate. Do any of you use Atlas at your schools?</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print";">Our next unit is Stories. It is a completely new unit for our team and I’m excited!!! It’s not like we didn’t teach about stories before, but now we have a few weeks to really dedicate to why stories are important and can be found all around us!! </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print";">I completely copied this idea from Kbumreading.com. I took her Fiction Story Walk and tweaked it to what elements I want my little people to focus on. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

It is an excellent way to practice fluency and reading skills such as volume, tone and expression. Plus the kids love it! I keep the poems themed by month and whoever is the line leader that day gets to lead the class in the poem. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print";">There are so many activities that you can do with poetry. I have attached just a quick Persona Poem intro lesson that I read about on Scholastic years ago. They come out very cute every year. It’s really funny to see what each kid picks to be. I will take pics after my class completes this little writing activity. </span></span><br />

I came across this clip and wanted to share. The situation in our country concerning education and unions is just out of control and it’s nice to see that there are people still willing to defend the average Joes of the world. </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Sweet lord U.S.A let’s pull it together and QUICK! </span></span></div>Ms. Wiley. I just knew that this is what I would do with my life. It wasn’t even much of a choice. I’m very, very lucky that my dream has come true and I’m actually happy to go to work each and every single day. In fact B constantly remarks that he cannot wait to be as happy as I am leaving the house for work every morning. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print";"><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/opinion/13kristof.html?_r=1&src=twrhp">Here</a> is a very interesting article about teachers, politics, perception, and society. I’m not saying I agree with Nicholas Kristof by any means, but it does elicit some intriguing and timely questions about the role of teachers in America. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: "Segoe Print";">It also kind of makes me want to move to Singapore. I hear it’s beautiful there. ;) </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><br />
